About the Freshman iLife Competition

Introduction

The Freshman iLife Competition is a team-based project designed to teach students the skills necessary to succeed in a digital age. The Freshman iLife Competition provides students with a memorable experience in multimedia production while introducing them to a technologically driven academic and professional world. Students are expected to cooperate with their fellow team members in order to produce a stunning three-minute piece of work within one of seven categories. The Freshman iLife Competition is working closely with the School of Journalism, College of Business, College of Arts and Science, College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources, College of Engineering, and also the FIG program in an effort to include as many Mizzou freshman possible. Since journalism freshman in particular are expected to purchase an Apple laptop, this project enables them to become more familiar with the software on their new computers. Upon completion of the competition, student projects will be judged and ranked. Winners will be recognized at an end of semester culminating ceremony and door prizes will be raffled off for attendees.

The Freshman iLife Competition would like to thank TigerTech, the University Bookstore, the MU Athletic Department, RagTag Cinema Cafe, and Apple Computer for providing prizes for the winners and attendees at the awards ceremony. We would also like to thank TJ Royall and Mark Jarvis, the Web site administrators, for their continued support of the Freshman iLife Competition.

Why, you ask, are we having the Freshman iLife Challenge?

There are two answers:

  1. Four years.
  2. A good contest with great prizes is always fun.

OK, the second answer is obvious but what about the first?

Four years ago no one you knew had an MP3 player, or heard of Tivo. Only geeks had digital cameras and camera phones were only used by government agencies that didn't exist. Now you use these amazing new tools each day for communicating your thoughts, ideas and ultimately your personal stories.

Let's look ahead four years. In 2008 most of us will have video phones and personal DVR's (digital video recorders) just slightly larger than an iPod. Your laptop computer will be at least 4 times faster, half the weight and 50% cheaper. Text books will be an oddity, and your instructors will deduct points from any project turned in on paper. The reality is this - the class of 2008 will be the first pure digital class to graduate from this university - whether you want to be or not.

Thus, the Freshman iLife Challenge. Your first opportunity to engage and learn and use and share the very cool new communication tools of your future career - no matter what that career is.

The Freshman iLife Challenge will be used as a baseline for the way you and your peers use digital technologies over the next four years. It will be used as a touchstone to test the completeness of your learning during this monumental transition in education. But most importantly it will be used to introduce you to some things not usually associated with traditional learning tools and methods - unbridled creativity, deep collaboration, face-to-face interaction with experts in your field a thousand miles away, and ... fun.

Those of us who put together the Freshman iLife Challenge look forward to seeing how you will surprise us and, more importantly, yourself with the entirely new ways you will be able to communicate your story or the stories that are important to you and to others.

Ultimately journalism is about effectively communicating and we're excited about the possibilities these tools from Apple provide in enhancing your ability to communicate. As you get started we know it will be a bit unnerving, frustrating, maybe scary and strange as you begin - but college has always been that way - so consider this part of the learning experience. Heck, if nothing else, you may win some sweet prizes.

To close we have just one request - Blow us away with a great story!!
